CSC Daysailer

Fundraising Campaign

The Cohasset Sailing Club, based on member feedback, would like to expand its fleet with the goal to extend the sailing season with a daysailer for our community. It is a more stable and seaworthy boat for adults and families. It will be a resource for many, getting use for open sailing, family charters, adult lessons, and youth adventures. Because this is contingent on raising the needed funds, we need your help to purchase a Marshal Sandpiper, a high quality, low-maintenance, classic-looking daysailer. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, which means your contribution is tax deductible.

Simple to store and trailer with the “hinged” (tabernacle) mast.

Fundraising Goal: $20,000

The Sailing Club is looking to raise enough funds for the boat purchase and everything it needs for its first season. With low maintenance costs, CSC anticipates the Sandpiper program will pay for itself thereafter. The boat will be made available for select youth and adult classes; for open sailing at little to no cost to members; instructor-skippered charters; and more.

Your contribution is tax deductible, as the CSC is 510(c)(3) charitable organization. We encourage donors to check with their employers in case they offer a corporate match.

The funds raised this Fall will go to the following with any additional money raised to be put toward the junior fleet.

  • Sailboat, trailer, boom tent, and winter cover (seeking a used boat built in early 2000s)

  • Mooring and gear

  • 1st year of maintenance

  • 1st year of winter storage

  • Insurance and registration

The Marshall Sandpiper

Marshall Sandpipers have been built locally in South Dartmouth, MA since 1972. It’s a day sailing version of the historical catboat. Catboats are single-masted vessels (i.e. a mainsail and no jib) that date back to the mid-1800s in New England, where their shallow draft, wide cockpits and stability made them ideal as working boats for fishing and transporting goods to commercial square riggers moored in local harbors.

Today, catboats are used for recreation and racing. There are thriving fleets nearby in Duxbury, the South Coast, and Cape Cod as well as up and down the East Coast from NJ to FL.

A unique design feature of a Sandpiper is its full keel, which has 200 lbs of ballast and a retractable centerboard. With the centerboard down, it draws less than 4 ft. With it up, only 16 inches. Their exceptional stability and shallow draft make them an ideal boat for sailing around Cohasset harbor and the local flats for sailors of all ages.

Easy and fun for younger sailors on their own.

How it will be Used

The CSC will look to incorporate the Marshall Sandpiper (and possible future Sandpipers) throughout the club’s programs.

  • Open sail for youth, adults, and families

  • Advanced youth sailing classes

  • Adult sailing classes

  • Non-competitive youth sailing activities

  • Private charters helmed by CSC instructors

  • Potentially extend the season, weather and staff permitting

Committed to Our Community for 65+ Years

  • Every summer we have a staff of 15-20 employees running classes and helping our community get out on the water. They include local residents who are in high school or recently graduated. They are the magic behind the scenes.

  • Last year, more than 180 sailers enrolled in our junior sailing program. This ranges from rising 5th graders all the way up to the high school race team.

  • CSC is made possible by the hard work and commitment of more than 25 volunteers who collectively dedicate hundreds of hours each year to serving on the board of trustees or helping make the facilities and boats a precious community resource.

  • Last summer, we had nearly 20 adult sailers take beginner or refresher sailing lessons and plan to grow this even more by adding a Sandpiper to the fleet.

  • We provide access to the harbor and ocean to more than 180 motor and paddle craft each season. This includes whalers and dinghies on the club docks and paddle boards and kayaks in the club racks, a unique public resource on the South Shore.

  • The CSC is home to one of the most scenic venues for events and celebrations on the South Shore - The Founder’s Hall (club house). The venue is staffed by volunteers with special pricing for town residents. Proceeds from the rentals support our junior sailing program and building maitenance.
